The Fujinon XF 23mm F1.4 R does a fantastic job of capturing images from a shallow depth of field and low light situations. At around $799, it’s a phenomenal value and I highly recommend it.
Fujinon XF 23mm F1.4 R Features
The Fujinon XF 23mm F1.4 R has a premium feel with its metal exterior. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with weather sealing. Instead, it has a clutch-style manual focus ring and aperture control ring. You can adjust the lens from f/1.4 to f/16, stopping every 1/3.
You’ll be able to turn the manual focus ring freely even when the lens is set to autofocus – however, it won’t do anything until you pull the ring toward the base of the lens. Once you hear the click, you’re good to go. You’ll now feel tactile resistance when turning the ring. It’s a very smooth process and one that I think you’ll enjoy.
Autofocus
The autofocus on the Fujinon XF 23mm F1.4 R works really well. This is something that I’ve come to expect from Fujinon lenses. It’s very quick, focusing in as little as 0.05 seconds if already semi-focused, and around 0.2 seconds if you’re just targeting the object.
One downside is the Fujinon XF 23mm F1.4 R doesn’t come with image stabilization. However, you can get image stabilization by pairing it with a camera that has sensor-based stabilization.
You can focus as close as 11″, which is pretty good for a 23mm. However, if you’re looking to mainly take close up shots, I recommend looking at another lens.
Image Quality
The Fujinon XF 23mm F1.4 R is incredibly sharp and incredibly bright. You’re going to take amazing photos with this lens. Any object that’s center-mass will shoot in great detail. There’s some blurring on the edges, but it’s not that bad. You can narrow the f-stop to improve that.
There isn’t much distortion, roughly 0.8%, which isn’t really visible to the naked eye. There’s also a slight vignette at the larger apertures, f/1.4 and f/2. Lightroom can correct both of these problems, if necessary.
Pros
- Incredibly sharp detail
- Quick autofocus
- Manual focus works well
- Great value for premium product
Cons
- No image stablization
- No weather resistance
Fujinon XF 23mm F1.4 R Review Conclusion
The XF 23mm F1.4 R is a fantastic 23mm from Fujinon. You’ll be able to take incredibly sharp, detailed photographs with either the autofocus or manual focus. There’s some slight blurring and distortion, but nothing that can’t be fixed by adjusting the f-stop or using lightroom. I think the Fujinon XF 23mm F1.4 R is a great addition to any photographer’s collection.
