Fujinon Xf 56mm F1.2 R Review

Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R Review

The Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R is an amazing short telephoto prime lens for your Fujifilm mirrorless camera system. Not only is the Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R worth the price tag, we think it’s a bargain.

Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R Features

The Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R has a premium feel to it. You’ll immediately feel the quality when you touch the metal barrel and see the physical aperture ring.

You’ll also notice how heavy the XF 56mm F1.2 R is, weighing in at 13.4 ounces. The squat lens measures in at 2.7″ x 2.9″ (HD) and has a front filter thread of 62mm. However, in this case, size doesn’t matter – it fits perfectly on any of Fujifilm’s mirrorless camera line.

Included with the Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R is a reversible hood. However, a neutral density filter is not included. You’ll have to get the XF 56mm F1.2 R APD for that (and pay $500 more, not really worth it for most users).

Aperture Control Ring

Like most Fujinon lenses, the aperture control ring sits at the base of the Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R. It’s marked with a f/1.2 setting, f/1.4 – f/1.6 full-stop markings, and an awesome A (automatic) position control. The range allows for third-stop incremental adjustments. The Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R doesn’t have image stabilization.

Knurled Manual Focus Ring

The Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R has a knurled manual focus ring that makes up most of the barrel. We mentioned earlier, but it’s coated in a premium-feeling metal.

Manual focus isn’t the best feature on the Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R. It takes some time getting used to. This lens is designed so when you’re turning the ring, it activates the in-lens focus motor. Usually this would turn the physical components, but that’s not the case with the Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R.

It’s very responsive, but you won’t feel it since there isn’t much tactile feedback. However, this isn’t a feature, or lack thereof, that’s unique to the Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R. You’ll find most lenses for mirrorless camera systems don’t have much, if any, tactile feedback.

We found that it takes roughly 0.5 seconds to lock focus. If you’re already relatively on-point, you can get that down to around 0.3 seconds. This is even with the Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R including the on-sensor phase detection.

Fujinon Xf 56mm F1.2 R Image Quality

Image Quality

The Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R captures a phenomenal image, particularly if you’re doing work where you’ll be focusing on one target, center-frame. If you’re taking portraits or still photography, then this is a great lens.

There’s a bit left to be desired when it comes to the quality towards the edges of the shot. However, if you’re using the lens for the designed purpose, then this won’t really affect you.

Pros

  • Sharp images
  • Can capture a shallow depth of field
  • Physical aperture control
  • Little distortion
  • Great value

Cons

  • A bit slow to focus
  • No image stablization
  • Not overly durable
  • Edges aren’t the sharpest

Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R Review Conclusion

Overall, the Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R is an excellent lens for Fujinon’s mirrorless camera system. You’re not going to find a better combination of value, image quality, features, and build quality than you fill with the Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R. It captures amazing photos, particularly portraits or still shots. While the lack of sharpness on the edges is a bit annoying, it shouldn’t deter you from buying the Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 R.
