Fujinon XF 60mm F2.4 R Macro Review

It may be one lens, but you get so much more out of it. Not only does it deliver velvety bokeh for portraits, but the Fujinon XF 60mm f/2.4 R Macro also gets you in real close for those “feel alive” nature shots. At just $649, this 90mm equivalent is quite a bargain.

Fujinon XF 60mm F2.4 R Macro Features

The Fujinon XF 60mm f/2.4 is an aspherical 90mm-equivalent macro lens with superior optical performance.  It features a 26.6-degree angle of view and a 39mm filter size.

It’s designed for APS-C-format FUJIFILM X-mount mirrorless cameras.

Build

This lightweight all-metal lens includes 10 Elements in 8 Groups, uses an aspherical element to limit distortion and spherical aberration for greater sharpness and accurate rendering. Fujifilm’s Super EBC coating reduces lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

It has a large manual focus ring and an aperture ring. Markings are all engraved and painted, with the exception of the certifications found on the bottom of the lens. They are laser-engraved.

The almost half-inch aperture ring is closer to the body and has click-stops between settings. It’s a bit loose which is great for moving between f-stops quickly.

The manual focus ring is around 1.25” wide, has deep grooves and feels great.

Auto Focus

Perfect focus every time with autofocus.

The Fuji 60mm ƒ/2.4 R uses an electrical motor housed in the lens to focus quickly. Going from infinity to in close in less than a second is quite good. On top of the speed, it’s accurate. Life for polarizer users will appreciate that the front element does not rotate.

Focus is a bit slow in low -light conditions while shooting macro. That’s the trade-off for its’ incredible precision and vast focus range. Keep in mind that the speed is dependent on your camera. Firmware updates and certain bodies, like the XM-1 or XE-1 have had customer reports of great satisfaction with speed.

Manual

The manual focus ring is responsible for the manual focus, using an encoder that communicates with the camera. The camera body, not the lens, is responsible for focus speed. There are no hard stops. There’s nothing connected to the thin, front ring. The ring moves freely in either direction, so you won’t feel anything. But you can see the focus scale on your screen.

Image Quality

The Fujinon XF 60mm F2.4 R Macro will create stunning, alive images.

The Flare resistance is great, there’s no visible distortion, no visible light falloff even at f/2.4 and no lateral color fringes. You get great micro-contrast, its’ super sharp from edge to edge, and there’s no problem with vignetting even with multiple thick filters.

Chromatic aberration is so well controlled you won’t be able to notice any with the naked eye. There is, as expected with a fast long lens this sharp, a hint of spherochromatism.

Sunstars are rarely made with the rounded 9-blade diaphragm.

It’ll focus super-close, and creates wonderful bokeh.

Macro

It’s not 1:1 but it’s good. Real good. In fact, it focuses so close that a one-inch tall object will fill your screen. To get the 1:1 feel just crop with your 24mp sensor.
