Bushnell Binoculars Buyer’s Guide

The Bushnell brand is highly praised for their reliable, high-quality and affordable, innovative products. They literally have a set of binoculars geared toward any outdoor activity imaginable from nature observation, to spectator sports, hunting and stargazing; it is hard to think of another brand that can compare.

As Bushnell produces many types of binoculars for many purposes, our buyer’s guide is designed to highlight a few necessities to keep an eye out for when making your purchase.

The ability to focus in on objects or targets, whether stationary or moving, is the main objective of any set of binoculars. Lower magnification binoculars (8X) are great for viewing targets that are small, fast moving but easy to detect as they have a wide field of view. High magnification binoculars are preferred for their ability to view intricate details from far away; however, they tend to have a narrow field of view.

Image stability

Image stabilization is an important feature to keep an eye out for in any set of binoculars. The more zoomed in you are, the more unstable the image will be; even breathing can cause you to lose sight of your target. Many types of binoculars counter this issue by using liquid filled prisms and gyroscopes that compensate and correct this issue. Keep an eye out for binoculars that are built with this in mind.

Lens coating

This is another factor that should not be overlooked when making your purchase. Quality lenses must be coated in anti-reflective properties to prevent irregularities and reduce the amount of light that is being reflected back toward your eyes. A good coating also acts as a safeguard from lens scratching and helps provide maximum light transmission.

Objective lens size

A great combination to look out for is a 40-42mm lens coupled with magnification levels of 8X to 10X. Binoculars that feature an objective lens 30mm and under are not very practical in the evening, as they are simply unsuitable in situations with low lighting. On the other hand, large objective lenses measuring 50mm and up, are better suited for lower light situations as they can absorb more light into the lenses.
